MEETINGS AND PANELS
26/07/2011
This year the two Italian authors’ associations (ANAC and 100Autori) have highlighted some realities, emerging trends, news from the audiovisual and from the cultural institutional scene in Italy and have dedicated four occasions to exploring the latter in more depth; moreover the SIAE (Italian Publishers and Authors Association) has promoted (in agreement with the Days and Anica and with the collaboration of “Nova – Is Sole 24 Ore”) a day on the themes of authors’ rights, “Micromega” and BLS have chosen the Days respectively to present the edition of the magazine dedicated to Italian cinema and for a seminar dedicated to “Creativity and territory”. Finally, together with the Province of Rome and Cinecittà Luce the Days present the third edition of “Cinema & Storia/100+1” which will start in the autumn.

THE MEANING OF THE STATE
State intervention should not only allow for maximum expressive freedom but should also commit itself to supporting artistic activities, freeing them from any political, advertising or commercial constraint. Laws are needed which on the one hand guarantee public funding with rules that are transparent and that respect fixed times and means, and on the other hand laws which, starting from now, free the circulation of works from any commercial impact. It is necessary to take stock of the renewed importance of public policy, of the release of cultural investment and of the democratic, free and plural circulation of works, and to interject with all the cultural, social and political forces available to support norms able to safeguard culture, and together, to regulate the market. ANAC offers an event which brings together creative, professional and entrepreneurial forces, so that even at a big festival such as Venice (where normally it is the works who do most of the talking) we are made aware of the urgency of thinking about the rules within which creativity can freely develop.
THE FEDERATION OF INDEPENDENT CINEMA, INDICINEMA, IS BORN IN VENICE
After the presentation at Rome’s Casa del Cinema, Indicinema – a project to re-launch Italian independent cinema – is taking on a legal character and is promoting a meeting between regional institutions, cultural representatives from political parties and all the realities susceptible to promoting and distributing independent cinema. The ANAC (National Association of Cinematographic Authors) is one of the constituent associations together with Artisti Indipendenti Comitato 3, Consequenze Network and FIDAC. The meeting will discuss an initial pilot project for the alternative distribution of independent films chosen for the “Percorsi di Cinema” (Film Paths) project taking place next autumn, created by ANAC in collaboration with Rome’s Casa del Cinema.

IMMATURE? THE NEW COMEDY BETWEEN TAKINGS AND REPETITIVENESS
A reflection on the phenomenon of the latest film seasons and of the latter in particular: the great public success and the great takings made by a series of comedies which have seen new (and near-new) directors, producers and actors sending into crisis those who, up until recently, held the monopoly over the box offices, thus tackling the audience of Italian "cine-panettoni" (mainstream slapstick movies released around Christmas) that have overtime been realised in all possible variations. It is now a phenomenon which is worth reflecting on, not only to point out the obvious distance from the classic Italian comedy but also to underline (or not) the relationship and the debts that these products have vis-à-vis television; to understand whether (or not) it is right to think that this type of film production serves to compensate for the endemic lack of a real cinema business in our country.
THE PHENOMENON OF THE WEB-SERIES
This event is based on the observation of the growing phenomenon of low-budget, high creativity television productions made especially for a particular channel, and intends to share ideas on the current transformation in the audiovisual system: a change that will soon probably determine a need to reformulate formal and aesthetic categories, editorial profiles and models of production. Attention will focus on new narrative forms, particularly that of the web series. Through case-studies which have become successful cult series such as FREAKS!, L'ALTRA and FACCIALIBRO, we examine the dramatic matrix from which they were launched and their various narrative aspects. On the one hand we have to address the question of progressively going beyond the film and television model towards new non-linear and infinitely more fragmented forms in the space and time of fruition and consumption of the audiovisual narrative. On the other hand we have to reflect on the extent to which the web is setting itself in ever greater competition against television and cinema.
SIAE IN VENICE 2011
THE MISSING MARKET– Authors, producers, navigators on the island of web

The SIAE (Italian Publishers and Authors Association) are present at Venice’s Lido together with ANICA and the Venice Days, in collaboration with “Nova/Il Sole 24 Ore”, to talk about authors’ rights.
Ever since the inception of the Venice Days in 2004, the SIAE has been its qualifying partner, in recognition of the direct commitment of film and television authors’ associations to cultural politics and to promoting quality cinema and international creativity, particularly in Europe. This year screenwriters, directors, producers, journalists, phone companies, broadcasters, give life to a day of workshops to take stock of the vexing question of the online management of creative products, the new frontier of platforms, the relationship with young consumers and authors’ awareness of visibility and of digital distribution channels.
CINEMA & STORIA/100+1. 100 FILMS AND ONE COUNTRY, ITALY
The journey into the memory of cinema and of the country promoted by the Venice Days in collaboration with the Province of Rome and Cinecittà Luce has reached its third edition. This year too will see around ten secondary schools in Rome and its provinces “adopting” seven films chosen in the 100+1 list drawn up by the experts brought together by the Venice Days. This year too the viewing of these films, chosen to span across genres and authors as much as possible, will be complemented by training, meetings with observers and protagonists from today’s and yesterday’s cinema and by opportunities for a deeper exploration into history and criticism. Culminating in the works produced by the pupils of the schools involved on the basis of the films watched, amongst which this year we proudly welcome a real short film made by the pupils of Rome’s Morgagni School: IO SONO L’UNIVERSO by Marco Zingaretti and Federico Giovannini, so assured and original that after having been screened in Venice it will be distributed in cinemas by Cinecittà Luce. While at the Days we will celebrate our project’s third season by discovering, together with the public, another fascinating – and probably “in progress” – journey, made by our friend Alberto Crespi, which follows the trails of the (not altogether) lost locations of yesterday’s cinema in VOI SIETE QUI. A ride that takes us back to the film sets with a care, a historical intelligence and an ability to read the transformations undergone by Rome and its surroundings that is really in perfect tune with the spirit and the aims of our project.
