synopsis Palestinian testimonies collected after the second Intifada revealed a harsh daily life reality that, for Israelis, had always belonged to the “others” - the Palestinians, and hence, were denied. A few years later, trespassing what was a real taboo, Israeli officers who served during the Intifada as well as Palestinian civilians gave an account of their memories. Collective memories of violence, of suffering, of humiliation. “I am not seeking a forgiveness or redemption by recounting these stories. I want only to assume responsibility for the acts I have committed, witnessed and heard of. I wanted [...] to file and preserve these testimonies in a joint Palestinian-Israeli archive for the future, for forthcoming generations, as a condition for reconciliation.” (Shlomi Elkabetz)
What separates reality from interpretation, objective reality from subjective point of view? Eighty minutes of film are enough to call every conviction into question. The start sees testimonials, painful and sincere, the voices of civilians and soldiers, Palestinians and Israeli. But then all of this becomes cinema. At the beginning the landscape is almost imperceptible: the camera moves slowly towards the body of the actor; we realise that it is indeed an actor and that the text being played out is somewhere between documentary and writing. Finally the camera captures a reality going on behind the characters; it lingers on details and imposes the author’s or observer’s point of view. And we the viewers are caught in the middle, forced to think, decide, accept or refuse. So that all the debates around the real or assumed partiality of denunciation fade into the background compared to the heart-wrenching story of humanity, fear and wish to be heard. (Giorgio Gosetti).
