synopsis Hua, a young teacher from Beijing, is a recent arrival in Paris. She meets Mathieu, a young worker who falls madly in love with her. Possessed by an insatiable desire for her body, he treats Hua like a dog. An intense affair begins, marked by Mathieu's passionate embraces and harsh verbal abuse. When Hua determines to leave her lover, she discovers the strength of her addiction, and the vital role he has come to play in her life. “I can understand Hua's feeling of being ‘in between’. That's actually a feeling of being between different people, between different politics and cultures, between different races and territories, between sex and love, between violence and tenderness, between love and bruises, a true human feeling, but lonely as well.” (Lou Ye)
Hua, a lonely Chinese woman studying in Paris meets Mathieu, a construction worker who falls madly in love with her. Without even realising Hua finds herself trapped in the jealous and oppressive love of her passionate new partner. As in his previous works, director Lou Ye also chooses in this film to give a sense of something, rather than the thing itself, evoking a painful sense of sadness, but never regret. With a very natural mise-en-scène and all the emphasis on characters' eyes and unsaid feelings (beautifully performed by Corinne Yam and Tahar Rahim), he delivers a poignant portrait of a woman torn between different races and territories, between violence and tenderness, between love and bruises…” (Elena Manrique). >Click here< to listen to the audio introduction to the film with exclusive extras, courtesy by Subti |
