Jafar Panahi
Before making his feature debut, Jafar Panahi (Mianeh, Iran, 1960) worked as assistant director to Abbas Kiarostami on Through the Olive Trees. His first feature, The White Balloon (1995), was scripted by Kiarostami and won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He received the Golden Leopard at Locarno two years later for The Mirror, and the Golden Lion at Venice in 2000 for The Circle. In 2003, Crimson Gold brought him the Un Certain Regard Jury Award at Cannes and Offside the Silver Bear at the 2006 Berlinale. Panahi was arrested on March 2, 2010 for participating in the demonstrations against the Iranian regime.
