VENICE DAYS CELEBRATES MARIO MONICELLI WITH "L' ULTIMA ZINGARATA "
23/08/2010
The funeral of journalist Giorgio Perozzi (Philippe Noiret), in the final scene of Mario Monicelli’s My Friends, is being revived 35 years later in the short film L’ultima zingarata: Tributo ad Amici Miei by Federico Micali and produced (and conceived) by Francesco Conforti. It will finally be worthy of Perozzi according to his friend Rambaldo Melandri’s (Gaston Moschin) who, upon seeing his friend’s semi-deserted funeral pined for “A huge funeral that would shake up everyone, with thousands of people, all crying, and wreaths, telegrams, bands, flags, hookers, soldiers” (My Friends, 1975).

L’ultima zingarata will have its world premiere on Friday, September 3, in the outdoor cinema of the Filmmakers Villa, in collaboration with Venice Days.

“Maestro” Monicelli makes a cameo appearance “playing” Adolfo Celi. The director loved the idea, saying “it would’ve been wonderful to end by My Friends that way.” The film also features the last of the “survivors” of My Friends, actor Gastone Moschin, who will finally get the wreaths, bands, flags, prostitutes and soldiers that he dreamt for his friend. Along with 1,000 “zingari” (gypsies), fans of the cult movie, who came spontaneously from throughout Italy in mourning dress, for a remake of one of the original film’s most famous scenes.

“This celebration,” says Conforti, “is, naturally, a cinematic tribute to Florence, Oltrarno and the film by Monicelli."
Says director Federico Micali: "In a moment of renewed interest in the cult film My Friends we liked the idea of a collective event that would renew passions for this great, inimitable masterpiece of the commedia Italiana."

The short film is a non-profit work made with help from main sponsor Savio Firmino arredamenti, local associations (including “PiazzArt”), local vendors and a collaboration with the Mediateca Toscana Film Commission.
