DOUBLE SHORT FILM ON WORLD LANGUAGES IS AWARDED PRIZE BY VENICE DAYS
19/08/2010
Venice Days has not started yet (opening day is September 1st at the Venice Film Festival) and yet there is already a winner: an Italian director triumphs in the SUB-TI competition on “Subtitles and language specificity”.

The Sub-ti Competition was launched two years ago at the Venice Days press conference. This year, the prize has gone to two films by the same filmmaker. The jury, made up of Giorgio Gosetti, Venice Days director, by Argentinian film director Celina Murga and by Sub-ti’s Managing Director Federico Spoletti, has unanimously awarded the prize to two extremely poignant short films sent by a young Italian director residing in New York, Tommaso Cammarano, a filmmaker who a few weeks ago received an award in the Premio Solinas screenwriting competition. He will be taking to Venice New York Quotes and New York Quotes Again.
“When I heard that Sub-ti was holding a 30-second short film competition on 'the use of subtitling in cinema as a vehicle for multiculturality, the city of New York, where I live, was an immediate source of inspiration. In one day, the director of photography and I walked around Manhattan and Brooklyn asking friends and strangers to give us a famous film quote in their language, the first one that came to mind. With New York Quotes and New York Quotes Again I wanted to capture the colors, the diversity and the energy of New York City.” Tommaso Cammarano
The competition, promoted to Venice Days by Sub-ti, the London-based subtitling company, selects short films from all over the world on the theme Subtitles and language specificity. Film subtitling for the cinema as a vehicle for multiculturality.
Sub-ti’s initiative is aimed at furthering its mission and offering an opportunity to young directors and future talents. Indeed, the competition is open to all directors, aspiring film-makers, film school students and media studies undergraduates of all nationalities from any country. Winning short films are printed onto film by Sub-ti, they are screened before select features for Venice Days, and later on they will be screened in many international festivals and exhibitions partnered by Sub-ti.
