VENICE DAYS CELEBRATES ROSSELLINI
02/08/2010
One of Roberto Rossellini’s most evocative dreams will be unveiled at the Venice Film Festival during Venice Days, in collaboration with the Roma Lazio Film Commission and thanks to Claudio Bondì, a long-time collaborator of the great maestro. Directed by Bondì, the documentary LA BALENA DI ROSSELLINI will be seen in world premiere in the outdoor cinema of the Filmmakers Villa on the day dedicated to the Roma-Lazio Film Commission. La balena di Rossellini looks at a film that the director of Rome, Open City never made, but for which he took copious notes while on a trip to Chile in May 1971, to make an interview-portrait of Salvador Allende.
Back from Santiago with Bondì – at the time his young student and later his assistant director – Rossellini read a newspaper account of a whale beached off the Pacific Coast, near a destitute fishing village. That simple article inspired a story on wealth and poverty that Bondì speaks of in La balena, through interviews with and the reminiscences of Renzo Rossellini, Emidio Greco, Adriano Aprà, Enrico Ghezzi, Franco Ferrarotti and the voice of Salvador Allende. The documentary was produced by Alessandro Bonifazi and Bruno Tribbioli for Blue Film with a contribution from the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with ROSSELLINI Film & TV and with support from the Roma Lazio Film Commission Chilean Embassy in Italy.
This event, coordinated jointly by Venice Days and the Roma-Lazio Film Commission, is part of a series of thematic encounters and days that will be held in the Filmmakers Villa by the leading Italian film commissions in order to examine and discuss local initiatives favoring Italian cinema at a time of general economic and creative difficulty. Besides Roma-Lazio, the other film commissions that will be present at this year’s Venice Days are: Cinesicilia, Puglia, Sardegna, Torino-Piemonte and Toscana.
