synopsis The story of a man who is visited by his cancer, which decided it would be a good idea if the two got to know each other better. “The idea for this film came about 20 years ago, inspired by a man who, I think, had the face of a cancer! (…) Every so often I thought back on it, I re-imagined it, but I didn’t really consider making a film about it. Then, one day, I suddenly wrote very quickly and with great pleasure a story of approximately 40 pages.” (Bertrand Blier) Nothing helps shatter the taboo of the unspeakable like comedy. And few filmmakers can use stinging irony and the gentle cruelty of laughter to reveal our weaknesses better than Blier. It used to be said that the secret to the commedia all’Italiana lay in creating an inimitable blend of laughter and tears, passing from one register to another. This film tells us that the same secret can be translated into other languages, with a different tone, to obtain the same universal effect. I am happy to welcome the most resounding provocation of a great auteur within the Venice section most open to the new and original. (Giorgio Gosetti) |
