synopsis Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1991. The communists have fallen from power and Divko Buntic returns to his small hometown to reclaim his family home. After a 20-year exile in Germany, Divko arrives in his flashy red Mercedes with sexy young girlfriend Azra, lucky black cat Bonny and a pocketful of Deutschmarks. "Cirkus Columbia is in no way similar to my experience, but there is something about that book that touches the nerve of almost every Bosnian, or should I say Herzegovinian. (...) I hope that putting this story on a big screen will help other children of war to remember.” (Danis Tanović)
“The war began during art history class.” Writer Ivica Djikic's account of the breakdown of the former Yugoslavia is transformed here into powerful and neo-(sur)realist images by Danis Tanović. The Balkans are a tinderbox that at times fuel fireworks, other times machine guns. Danis knows how to show us the ruthless horror and the sensual vitality that vibrate in those lands, divided by feuds and united by pride. Tanović, (Miki) Manojlovic and (Boris) Ler are back in their Cirkus, desperate acrobats on the tightrope of a cinema that is, despite everything, hopeful. (Boris Sollazzo) |
