#3 - ANDERS RØNNOW - KLARLUND
06/09/2004
The director of Strings, in Venice for the premiere of the film, talks about his film and his relationship with cinema.
First of all let’s talk about the language of the puppets. We have seen a version in English but is there another original version?
This version was made because it is, obviously, the most convenient, but different versions were made for all the Scandinavian countries. We want the audience to watch the images without being forced to read subtitles. The fact that the puppets do not move their mouths has helped us a lot in the dubbing. I don’t agree with the viewing of subtitled films so I preferred to make many versions.
What is your opinion on European cinema in general and on Italian cinema in particular?
I think that good films are made in Europe. If I remember correctly it was Bunuel who said that a good film must be provincial. Perhaps we should be asking a different question with regard to Italian cinema: are there any problems with this provincialism? I think the answer is no. If an author reflects on his particular situation I don’t think this is a problem. I can’t see any conflict between Italian subjects and those of other nationalities. The important thing is to avoid making films with a common denominator, as American films are made, because while we might facilitate things on the market we would be limiting the production and the supply.
Where did the idea for Strings come from?
I was on an aeroplane. There was a little screen on the seat back in front of me and it was showing an advertisement set in Prague. The actors were marionettes and I started thinking what it must be like to be a puppet. I spent the rest of the trip drawing marionettes and the strings which multiplied and multiplied. I tried to imagine millions of strings, so many that the poor puppet would be imprisoned by them. It seemed immediately to me to be an important idea and I started developing it.
In the photogallery, you may find pictures from the day and below a video of the press conference.
