Erik Gandini (Bergamo, Italy, 1967) moved to Sweden at the age of 19 to study at Biskops Arnö, a documentary film school, and continued his studies at the University of Stockholm. His first documentary, Raja Sarajevo (1994), won numerous awards throughout the world. Since then he has directed and produced Not Without Prijedor, about a group of young Bosnian refugees in Sweden who return to their country to fight; Amerisians, on the descendents of American soldiers who remained in Vietnam after the war; and Sacrificio: Who Betrayed Che Guevara? , co-directed with Tarik Saleh. With an eye highly critical of consumer society, he directed Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers, which screened in numerous international festivals. He and Saleh also made Gitmo, a documentary on the military base in Guantanamo, which won prizes at the Seattle and Miami film festivals.
In a videocracy the key to power is image. In Italy, a single man has dominated images for over three decades. First a TV magnate, then presidente, Silvio Berlusconi has created a perfect pair, of politics and television entertainment, influencing like no one else the content of commercial TV in Italy. Many consider his television channels, known for their excessive flaunting of semi-nude girls, to be a reflection of his tastes and personality.
