Alex van Warmerdam

(Haarlem, Netherlands, 1952) was co-founder of the theatre group Hauser Orkater (which later became the music-theatre group Hauser Orkater). In 1980 he founded the theatre group De Mexicaanse Hond (The Mexican Dog) with his brother Marc van Warmerdam. He made his feature debut in 1986 with Abel. He stars in most of his own movies and is married to Dutch actress Annet Malherbe, who also appears in most of his films.

The Last Days of Emma Blankis a horrific story. Greed and a total lack of compassion are what drive all the characters. Three of them die. The first is strangled, the second dies of thirst surrounded by her family, the third is beaten to death by his brother-in-law. At the end of the story, no one has made any progress, no one has been chastened or seen the error of their ways. For nobody is the future a cheerful prospect. It may be obvious: The Last Days of Emma Blank is a comedy. More precisely: a tragicomedy with horror and farce elements. Tragedy, comedy, horror and farce. Even more than in my previous films I want to play around with these four elements: making the tragic comical, the comical painful, the horror cruel but amusing, the farcical sad.
