NOT JUST FESTIVALS, NOT JUST AWARDS

Besides achieving public and critical acclaim at festivals worldwide, Venice Days films are also beginning to gain recognition from international cinemagoers. This is due to growing interest from distributors who are convinced of the potential their films have for a theatrical or DVD release (in Italy, for example, six titles have come out on DVD in the past year alone).
Figures show that the Venice Days films of the last two editions were seen on theatrical release by audiences in 30 countries. Besides Italy – in which ten titles “discovered” by Venice Days in 2007 and 2008 were released, some to very good box office returns – these countries include France and Belgium (nine Venice Days films released in the last two months), Holland (eight films) and Germany (seven).
Of added interest is the fact that not all of the 30 countries have traditional ties with Europe (for reasons of taste, commercial criteria and so forth) and include Brazil, Colombia, Kuwait, Australia, Canada and Israel.
The United States has seen the release of three Venice Days titles of the past two years, as well as numerous DVD releases (the latest of which, on April 28, was Aleksey Balabanov’s Cargo 200, screened in the fourth edition of Venice Days).
