synopsis Five people meet at a group therapy session for fat people. A place where the main characters don’t expect to loose weight, necessarily, but hope to find out what led them to be overweight and the reasons why they don’t feel happy with their bodies. As it turns out, weight is the least of their problems and so are their bodies. They will end up facing their fears, desires, obsessions, needs, dreams, problems that haunt them, family, partners, love, sex, mistakes, guilt… Gordos is a comedy about people trapped in situations they can’t (or don’t want to) escape.
Smart and fun comic satire that explores one of the Western World’s ongoing major obsessions – fat – or rather, our body shapes; what we eat; when we eat; what we weigh and when we diet. Set in the confines of a fat therapy clinic, Sanchez Arevalo’s engaging, very entertaining movie depicts the plight of the clinic’s attendees, as they struggle to shed weight while dealing with a kaleidoscope of familial, professional, social and sexual pressures. The therapist himself also proves to be no saint, as he struggles to combat his own prejudices against his pregnant wife’s ballooning body. Pleasingly, Gordos is not Almodovar lite or simply a frothy romp, it manages to be moving and intelligent about the subject and engenders empathy and understanding of its diverse characters, whilst remaining genuine fun.
