synopsis Frankie is dying. Irene hasn’t forgiven him. And they are racing against time to find their way home. Frankie needs help and Irene is the one he turns to. He must go home one last time. And, like so many times before, Irene is extending herself beyond her common sense. The two set out on a journey that becomes more than getting home; confronting the past, love, understanding, and self discovery. Barking Water is a tale of great love that looks at what brings us all together. It’s a tale of home… and what it takes to get there.
The road trip is a constant in the American myth; the metaphor of the voyage as the synthesis of the twilight of life is just as old a model, if not older. The road movie has often been used to narrate this double archetype. Frankie and Irene make their journey within a culture and a land that is inexorably losing itself. What struck us most about this small film – which was almost entirely self-produced and arises from Native American pride – is its radiant lightness and its capacity to traverse places and memories with an almost hypnotic visual style. As well as the contrast between the sound of Frankie’s voice (a “constant bass” that resounds in our minds) and the sounds of life that do not diminish around him, but rather accompany him to the source of the river of life.
