synopsis Honeymoons is set in contemporary Albania, Serbia, Italy and Hungary. We follow the fortunes of two young couples who leave their respective home countries in search of a better life in Western Europe. When the Albanian couple arrives in a southern Italian port, after all sorts of incidents, their problems begin. The same fate awaits the Serbian couple when they enter the European Union through the Hungarian border by train. Unfortunate coincidences prevent them, at least temporarily, from fulfilling their dreams, as is often the case with young people in the Balkans who pay for the mistakes of previous generations. Honeymoons is the first film co-produced by Albania and Serbia.
Honeymoons is a strong and suggestive social allegory; this genre used to be a speciality of the cinema of former Yugoslavia. Goran Paskaljevic as if making two pictures at the same time, tells two parallel, similar stories of two couples, an Albanian and a Serbian one. They cannot find their place in their own families, try to escape, but emigration proves impossible. Both the Albanian and the Serbian characters are cursed with the odium of the crimes they did not commit. The motive of Kosovo, the place where both sides of the conflict suspect each other of war crimes, let us understand the Balkan complex. The trajectories of both innocent couples provide us with a whole variety of situations in which they must play the role of those guilty, accused by their compatriots or by the external world: isn't it widely assumed that all the inhabitants of the Balkans have skeletons in their closets? Is it possible to leave this complex behind?
In this first and unique Serbian-Albanian co-production, Paskaljević shows the same objectivity and ironic detachment in his attitude towards the new Albanian corrupt elites and the generation of Serbian fathers for whom war is not over yet. The motive of the Balkan wedding - magnificent, ecstatic and at the same time full of hatred - is reminiscent of Kusturica's movies. But Paskaljevic seems to be the opposite of Kusturica. He looks at the Balkans not from the perspective of an archaic national utopia, but from the standpoint of a European community, which one day will embrace these nations. In this sense he is more optimistic than the director of the Underground. The young characters of Paskaljevic's picture do not feel responsible for their fathers's ideas and fears, do not want to participate any longer in their national prejudices and phobias. They just want to cross the border, to enter their Europe as individuals.
