synopsis
Young Italian miner Mario Balducci is about leave Hannover, where he tried to make his fortune, and return home, when he meets Totò, a shrewd trafficker from Rome who has become rich selling cloth and rugs, and who convinces Mario to stay. Mario starts working with Totò, then Raffaele, an enterprising Neapolitan who sells cloth on a large scale throughout all of West Germany, through a group of magliari (cloth sellers). However, Totò, who wants to carve out an independent role for himself, convinces the magliari, including Mario, to leave Raffaele and work for Mayer, a wealthy German, under his, Totò’s, supervision. The magliari move from Hannover to Hamburg, where trouble starts up quickly. The Neapolitans have ousted a group of Polish refugees who exact revenge against the newcomers by sabotaging their activities. Moreover, Mayer has a pretty, young wife who soon begins an affair with Mario. Totò is in favor of the relationship, in the hopes that it will contribute to binding Mario and the others to Mayer’s business organization. But events come to a head when a violent fight breaks out between the magliari and the Poles, in which the police must intervene. The magliari refuse to continue taking orders from Totò, who out of desperation tries to blackmail Mayer’s wife, to no avail. Mayer makes a deal with Raffaele, who takes back control of the operation after getting rid of Totò. Mario tries to convince Mayer’s wife to run away to Italy, but she does not want to give up her current comforts to return to a life of poverty.
