synopsis In Mostaganem, a coastal town 200 kilometers from Algiers, Hassan, a fisherman who used to organize ferry crossings of illegal immigrants, decides to help a group who wants to emigrate to Spain. Four of his friends and six brûleurs from southern Algeria, who finance most of the trip, take part in the adventure. Theirs seems a true commando operation, prepared to the smallest detail and in secret, by Hassan, Nasser and Rachid. They buy a boat, an engine and petrol; they check the weather forecast. But from the very beginning there are unforeseen circumstances, such as the arrival of Nasser's girlfriend Imène, who inisists on coming with them. The second problem is even more serious. In their febrile preparations, the group doesn't notice a mysterious man spying on them. On the day of their departure, the mysterious man shows up wielding a gun, threatening them to take him along.
Rashid, Omar and Nasser can’t take it anymore, they want “to burn”, in their jargon, to leave. Leave Algeria and try their luck in Europe. But as Omar says: to leave is to die, and to stay is to die. While Omar decides “to leave without leaving” and hangs himself, his two friends Rashid and Nasser, and his sister Imène will go. Hassan, a former fisherman who organized clandestine crossing by sea, will help. What happens at sea is not his problem. Veteran Algerian director Merzak Allouache wanted to tell the story of those dozen thousands migrants we hear about in the news each year, who drown or get arrested as soon as they reach European beaches. Allouache does it with great restraint and style. The photography by Philippe Guilbert with stunning night views at sea gives the story a deceiving languor. Nabil Asli as Rashid, Seddik Benyagoub as Nasser and Lamia Boussekine as Imène give resonant performances.
