Alexey Balabanov

The idea to make that film came to me almost 10 years ago in 1995 or 1996. But the script was written only 1 year ago. Its time came. I believe I have chosen the right time to make the film. Cargo 200 is just a film about 1984 as I remember it, as I imagine and see it. I wanted to make a hard-hitting film about the end of the Soviet Union and I made it… Part of it is my own experience, another part is based on the stories people told me. This is how I remember that time.



Director, scriptwriter, producer Alexey Balabanov was born in Sverdlovsk in 1959. Graduated from Foreign Languages College in Gorky and Director’s Courses in Moscow. He made two documentaries and moved to St. Petersburg where he directed his first feature film.
Among his movies: Happy Days in 1992, official selection at the Cannes Film Festival; The Castle , 1994, a Russian-French-German, official selection in Montreal and Rotterdam; Brother , 1994, official selection in Cannes and, among the several prizes collected in different festivals, special jury prize at the Turin Film Festival; Brother 2 in 2000; The War, in 2002, selected in more than 30 festivals; It Does Not Hurt in 2006.
