#1 THE SESSION OPENS THE VENICE DAYS WITH AN INVESTIGATION ON ITALIAN JUSTICE
01/09/2006
The protagonists are a seventy-year-old judge of appeal, his deputy judge and a lawyer, the major and most authoritative criminal lawyer in Naples, who are all involved in a camorra (the name of the local criminal organisation) case in Naples.
The film that opens Venice Days is a real journey into the life of the above protagonists, which manages to outline both their way of living and the world of Italian justice. The film also marks the brave return to documentary of the director Vincenzo Marra, whose commitment has been awarded on several occasions throughout various countries, thanks to his films much acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

The Session Is Open stems from the need to see with my own eyes what justice in Italy is like’ writes Vincenzo Marra. ‘For too many years we had just debated this subject without really knowing it, therefore my curiosity drove me to start looking at what happened inside the criminal court of my home town, Naples. In order to do this, I decided to follow from close the people who have a direct and tangible experience of justice: the President of a court, his deputy and Naples’ major criminal lawyer. All of them are working on the same trial, a murder case committed by one of the many camorra representatives running their business in the area. They, my main characters, accepted to expose themselves and their roles, letting me enter their professional lives, without being afraid of showing what they are like. Using the same method as the one I had employed in one of my previous works, Estranei alla massa, I succeeded in overcoming their distrust and in making a real film with no barriers, although, as usual, I have tried never to judge, but merely to look at what was going on’.
