EUROPA CINEMAS RENEWS ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH VENICE DAYS
13/06/2006
With more than 1560 screens in 59 countries, Europa Cinemas is the most important film network of distributors and exhibitors of European, African, and Mediterranean films. The network is supported by the Programmes Media Plus, Euromed Audiovisual and European Development Fund of the European Union, the Centre National de la Cinématographie (Paris), Eurimages (Council of Europe – Strasburg), the French Ministry of foreign affairs, the International Agency of French Speaking World (Paris).
During the partnership renewal with Venice Days for 2006, Claude-Eric Poiroux , General Director, and Fatima Djoumer, head of the international relationship of Europa Cinemas, have met Fabio Ferzetti in Cannes.
It's the third consecutive year that the prestigious Label, created in 2003 and consisting in an economic support to a stable distribution in the movie theatres linked to the network of Europa Cinema, represents the official recognition for one of the films selected at Venice Days.
In 2004, when the Venetian independent sidebar was born, the first Europa Cinemas – Venice Days Label had been granted to the Austrian film Darwin's nightmare , by Hubert Sauper.
The film thus obtained the Europa Cinemas support for its launching in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Greece, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary and, recently, in the Czech Republic and in Italy. After the Venice prize, the film got a nomination for Best Documentary at the Academy Awards 2005 and won the César 2006 for the best cinematographic début. In 2004 it got the same achievement at the European Awards.
In the same way, Le petit lieutenant , by the French filmmaker Xavier Beauvois, winner of the Label at the Venice Days in 2005, has been one of the greatest successes in France and is about to be distributed in the whole Europe. It is the winner of the César 2006 for the best actress performance (Nathalie Baye).
