synopsis Antoine (Jalil Lespert) graduates from police academy and moves to the big city intent on making his contribution to the fight against crime. Captain Vaudieu (Nathalie Baye) takes him under her wing. Antoine fits easily into her team of work-hard, play-hard detectives. Then tragedy strikes and Vaudieu has to fight the memories that she used to drown in drink. Revenge is small comfort.
Le petit Lieutenant is Xavier Beauvois’ fourth long feature film after such acclaimed films as Nord (1991) and Cannes Jury Prize N’oublie pas que tu vas mourir (1995). In Le petit Lieutenant, Xavier Beauvois’ subtle and impressionistic mise-en-scène, dwells as much on his characters’ face than it follows the lead in this seeming film noir investigation. What’s important, seems to be saying Beauvois’ camera, is what lies just below the surface of emotions, looks and words left unsaid.
